Accident, incident and RIDDOR reporting in care homes.
A care home logs falls, skin tears, medication errors and near misses all the time. Most stay in the home. A few must be reported by a deadline. The risk is missing one, or reporting it late.
- Log every accident and incident, then review them for patterns.
- Some work-related events must go to the HSE under RIDDOR 2013, by a deadline.
- RIDDOR covers work-related harm. Not every resident fall is reportable.
- Some events also go to the regulator: CQC in England, the Care Inspectorate in Scotland.

Writing an incident down is only the start.
Most falls are logged and reviewed in the home. A few must go to the HSE under RIDDOR, or to the regulator, by a deadline. You need to see which ones.

Reports have deadlines. An incident in a folder for a fortnight can miss them. Write it down when it happens, and someone can decide in time.

RIDDOR 2013 covers work-related deaths, specified injuries, some injuries to non-workers, some diseases and dangerous occurrences. Each has its own deadline. The key word is work-related. A fall from a resident's own frailty is not automatically reportable. A fall caused by how the work was done may be. Check the current HSE guidance case by case.
