Environmental compliance work happens on the ground: a permitted waste transfer station, an oil store behind a workshop, a drainage interceptor at the back of a yard, a management system audit against ISO 14001. The record for each one has to survive an Environment Agency inspection, a client audit or a pollution incident investigation years later. So the real question about environmental inspection software is not which app has the most features. It is which tool makes the record get written while the officer is still on site.

Environmental inspection software for the UK.
A practical guide to recording site environmental compliance inspections and audits in the field, from paper and generic audit apps to a WhatsApp workflow your officers already know, covering permit checks, pollution prevention and ISO 14001 evidence.

The point
Software does not make the site compliant.
Meeting the permit conditions does. Software makes the inspection easier to complete on site, harder to forget an item, and faster to hand back to the office. A good tool means nobody reconstructs a site walk from memory in the van on the way back to the depot.
One platform, three jobs
Where environmental teams use it.
Environmental permit audits
Checking a site against the conditions of its Environment Agency, SEPA or NRW permit, with photos and readings logged as the evidence the regulator expects.
Pollution preventionSpill and oil storage inspections
Spill kits, bunding, interceptors and oil stores checked against pollution prevention good practice and the oil storage rules, recorded on the spot.
Management systemISO 14001 internal audits
Aspects and impacts, the legal register, objectives and corrective actions captured as ISO 14001:2015 internal audit evidence for the next surveillance visit.
The friction
Most audit apps never get used on site.
An officer walking a yard in the rain is not opening a bespoke app with a fresh login. They use it for a week, then quietly go back to paper and write it up later. The record you complete at the point of observation beats the one you rebuild that evening, every time.
Run inspections on WhatsApp
No app install. No training.
Officers use the phone they already have. Text, voice note or photo. The report generates itself. Setup to first live workflow usually takes under a week.
The short version
- On-site environmental compliance work spans three common jobs: permit compliance audits, pollution prevention and spill inspections, and ISO 14001 internal audits.
- The regulator differs by nation: the Environment Agency in England, SEPA in Scotland, and Natural Resources Wales in Wales, each enforcing environmental permits under the relevant regulations.
- Most officers never fill in a dedicated app on site. They complete it later, from memory, and the evidence trail suffers.
- Per-report pricing beats per-seat for firms with a mix of field and office staff, because adding people is free.
- The software captures the inspection and the evidence trail. It does not make the site compliant. Meeting the permit conditions does that.
The point
What environmental inspection software is actually for
Field environmental teams generate a lot of records: permit compliance checks, pollution prevention inspections, waste duty of care audits, and management system audits. Each has its own standard and its own audience, from the Environment Agency to a corporate client to an ISO 14001 certification body. What they share is that the record has to be accurate, timestamped and complete.
Software does not make a site compliant. Meeting the permit conditions and the law does. What software does is make the inspection easier to complete correctly on site, harder to forget an item, and faster to deliver. That outweighs any feature list. The tool's only job is to make on-site completion the path of least resistance for an officer who is cold, outdoors and short of time.
Who enforces what
Environment Agency, SEPA and NRW
Environmental regulation in the UK is devolved, so the regulator depends on the nation. The Environment Agency covers England, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) covers Scotland, and Natural Resources Wales (NRW) covers Wales. In England and Wales, most industrial and waste activities need a permit under the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2016; Scotland runs its own regime. Each regulator can inspect a site, assess compliance against the permit, and take enforcement action.
Quickler captures the on-site inspection and surfaces it on a dashboard so the office sees status without chasing. It does not interpret the regulations for you, and the rules vary by nation and change over time. Treat any compliance judgement as the competent person's, and check the current guidance from your regulator. See the environmental permit compliance audit guide for the detail.
Pollution prevention
Oil storage, bunding and spill response
A large share of on-site environmental risk is about stopping pollutants reaching drains and watercourses. Oil storage above certain volumes is governed by the Control of Pollution (Oil Storage) (England) Regulations 2001, with similar rules elsewhere, requiring secondary containment such as a bund. Spill kits, interceptors and clean drainage are the daily defences. An officer checking these needs to record what is present, what works, and what is missing, with photos.
Quickler records each of these as the officer walks the site, with images attached at the point of observation rather than sorted out later. It does not certify the bund or replace an integrity test. See the spill response inspection report guide for the item list.
Management systems
ISO 14001 internal audits
Firms certified to ISO 14001:2015 run internal audits of their environmental management system: checking the register of aspects and impacts, the legal and other requirements register, the objectives and targets, and whether corrective actions from the last audit were closed. The internal audit programme is itself an audited requirement, so the evidence trail matters at the next surveillance visit.
Quickler captures internal audit findings, nonconformities and corrective actions as structured records on a dashboard, ready for the auditor. It is not a certification body and does not issue the certificate. See the ISO 14001 audit checklist guide.
Pricing
Per report, not per seat
Most audit apps charge per seat. For an environmental firm that is the wrong shape: the compliance manager who reads one audit a month pays the same as the officer who files four a week, and every subcontractor you add costs more.
Quickler charges per report, with unlimited users on every bundle. Bundles run from Quickler 50 at 50 pounds a month for 50 reports, up to Quickler 500 at 500 pounds a month for 500 reports. Add as many officers, subcontractors, managers and admins as you like; you pay for the reports you file, not the people who could file them. Pricing is approximate and shifts, so check the current pricing page before you commit.
Questions, answered
What is environmental inspection software?
It is any tool that helps an officer record a site environmental compliance inspection or audit and produce a report: permit compliance checks, pollution prevention and spill inspections, waste duty of care audits, and ISO 14001 internal audits. The options range from paper, to generic audit apps like iAuditor, to conversation-based tools like Quickler that run the workflow over WhatsApp so there is no app to install.
Who regulates environmental compliance in the UK?
It depends on the nation. The Environment Agency regulates in England, SEPA in Scotland, and Natural Resources Wales in Wales. In England and Wales, most industrial and waste activities are permitted under the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2016. Check the current requirements with the regulator for your site, as the rules vary by nation and change over time. This is not legal advice.
Can I run environmental inspections over WhatsApp?
Yes. Quickler's workflows run over the WhatsApp Business API. The officer receives each question in their existing WhatsApp chat, replies with text, a voice note or a photo, and the completed report generates automatically. No separate app or login is required, and Quickler manages the WhatsApp Business API account on the firm's behalf.
Does the software make my site compliant?
No. Software does not make a site compliant. Meeting the permit conditions and the law does. Quickler captures the on-site inspection and the evidence trail, with timestamps and photos, and surfaces it on a dashboard so nothing is lost. The competent person and a compliant site carry the compliance.
